La Filosofía del derecho de Hegel constituye un parteaguas en la historia de las ideas políticas. Siguiendo a Norberto Bobbio, aristotelismo e iusnaturalismo moderno serían los discursos políticos hegemónicos que antecedieron a Hegel ; si bien es cierto que ya David Hume y Adam Smith habían aterrizado la reflexión política de lleno en el terreno histórico y social de la acción humana, y en lo concreto de la dinámica económica capitalista de la Modernidad –con lo que se acaba evidenciando lo limitado de un Aristóteles o un Hobbes a efectos de una teoría política de utilidad práctica para el hombre moderno–, su planteamiento filosófico estaba construido desde una metafísica empirista que, a final de cuentas, no integra de manera unitaria la metafísica clásica desde los presocráticos hasta los modernos, y por lo mismo, está limitada tanto en el terreno ontológico, como en el epistemológico y el político, a efectos de ofrecer una amplia síntesis explicativa que dé cuenta de la complejidad e historicidad del actuar humano
